The oldest fish canning company in the world. Fish canning production in Matosinhos is very old, dating back at least to Roman times, about 1700 years ago. During the Middle Ages, fish salting was also important, continuing until the 19th century with "salazones". And although the first factory of the modern canning industry (in sauce and packaged in cans) only appeared in Matosinhos in 1899, it is also in this municipality that we find the oldest fish canning industry in the world still in operation: "Ramirez". Founded in 1853 in the Algarve, this company has been based in Matosinhos since the mid-20th century. Also motivated by industrial tourism, its modern facilities, where the technological vanguard of the sector can be seen, also include a shop, a museum and an auditorium.
