Clube Naval Povoense

It is the oldest club in Póvoa de Varzim and one of the oldest in Portugal, sharing its very strong connection with the sea and all the sporting and leisure activities associated with it.

Founded on September 18, 1904, it began as a predominantly sporting, cultural, and local association. Its purpose was to promote various forms of entertainment among its members, mainly regattas, swimming, and rowing, as well as the physical and intellectual development of its members, but also to create a library, a museum, and even to build boats. It soon rendered invaluable services to the region in promoting our beach.

It organized excursions to the main northern towns, adorned the city to receive the numerous visitors in enormous city festivals, festivals that exceeded all the city's capacity. It organized the famous Maritime Festivals which "...were something remarkable in the north of the country due to the landing, reception, and parade of our sailors through the streets of the town, which a sea of ​​flowers covered without interruption." It organized regattas, conferences, theatrical and cinematic performances, tributes, collections for shipwreck victims, exhibitions, and even built monuments. It also provided educational and charitable services. In the 1950s, it supplied schoolbooks to needy children and served meals to the poor at its headquarters during Christmas and Easter, with meals served by kind ladies from the town. From the 1950s onwards, it began to value nautical and sporting activities.

Its sporting history boasts a high number of national and regional titles won in various sports, and numerous international participations. Its strengths include the role it played in training new athletes of all ages, the organization of various sporting events that brought hundreds of participants to Póvoa every year in the most competitive disciplines, the organization of regional, national, and world championships in various sports, and the representation of the city and its people within and outside the country through participation in numerous competitions. Today, sailing, sport fishing, underwater activities, surfing, and water polo are its main activities.

In 1998, after thirteen years without proper and permanent facilities, it occupied modern sports facilities located in the recreational area of ​​the port of Póvoa de Varzim. These conditions allowed, once again, the resumption of the organization of national and international competitions. In 1999, the Municipality of Póvoa entrusted it with the operational management of the Póvoa Marina. Its occupancy was a growing reality, and its rapid international dissemination and acceptance were evident, bringing numerous foreign vessels to the marina.

The Clube Naval Povoense maintains a permanent participation in the social and cultural events of the city, always attentive and involved in the major decisions of the life of this city that surrounds and also influences it.
