On September 11, 1943, a group of sailors decided to found a club with the goal of promoting sailing. On October 12 of the same year, a meeting was held where it was decided to appoint an organizing committee for a new club whose sole activity would be the sport of sailing and which should be called Clube de Vela Atlântico (Atlantic Sailing Club). On April 19, 1944, the first General Assembly was held, where the legal existence of the Clube de Vela Atlântico was confirmed and the first Board of Directors was appointed, with Mr. Engineer Mário Botelho de Souza as its president. At the same meeting, the transfer of land to the Clube de Vela Atlântico by the Porto Customs and the Leixões Health Delegation was confirmed, where the current facilities of the Clube de Vela Atlântico would be built.
