Avis Nautical Station

A network of tourism offerings, fundamentally based on the Maranhão Reservoir, brings together a group of partners providing services ranging from nautical activities, accommodation, restaurants, cultural and tourist entertainment, among others, constituting an integrated tourism offer.

It is what makes us different, what makes us unique. Breaking the stereotype of an arid Alentejo, with golden and undulating plains, the body of water of the Maranhão Reservoir, which extends for 40 km, is the differentiating and unifying element of a unique territory. The construction of the dam, at the end of the 1950s, had a profound impact on the landscape, but also on the customs and traditions of the local population, and created a new pole of economic and tourist attraction. For over half a century, many social and economic activities have developed around the endogenous potential of this 606 km² territory, enriched by the existence of this body of water. These activities include the production of local products, the provision of accommodation, sports, and leisure activities, all based on the pillars of sustainability, respect for nature and traditions, in order to preserve what distinguishes us.

Over the last decade, rowing has been one of the main elements in disseminating the potential of Avis. Proof of this is the fact that it is considered by elite rowers as one of the best places in the world to practice the sport. For this reason, the waters of the Maranhão Reservoir have been the backdrop where Olympic and world champions have prepared to win medals, where amateurs and professionals compete in various events, and where young people from different parts of the country, and especially from the municipality, discover a taste for this sport.

The whole is more than the sum of its parts, therefore the Avis Nautical Station presents itself as a project that brings together the efforts and wills of a group of partners aiming to create a unique and high-quality tourism offering, taking the name of this territory throughout the country and the world and offering visitors more than just a trip, an experience that engages the senses and emotions, leaving a lasting mark on those who visit, taking a little bit of us with them, adding memories.
